Dublin Retains Position as Ireland’s Wealthiest County, CSO Report Reveals
Dublin: A new report from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) confirms that Dublin continues to dominate as the wealthiest county in Ireland, with residents enjoying the highest average disposable income in the country. The findings are based on the 2023 Income and Regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Report, which provides a comprehensive analysis of income distribution across Ireland’s counties.
Dublin Tops the Income Rankings
According to the report, workers in Dublin City and County had an average disposable income of €32,393 in 2023, maintaining their position at the top of the national rankings. This figure represents income before taxes and social insurance contributions, highlighting Dublin’s strong economic performance relative to other regions.
Cork follows closely behind, with an average disposable income of €29,876, while Limerick ranks third at €29,491. The report attributes Dublin’s economic advantage to its thriving IT sector, while Cork’s robust construction industry has played a key role in driving income growth for its residents.
Significant Income Disparities Across Counties
The CSO report also highlights stark disparities in income levels across Ireland. Longford recorded the lowest average disposable income at €22,251, which is 36% lower than the average income in Dublin. Laois (€22,257) and Donegal (€23,271) also reported some of the lowest income levels in the country.
Moreover, counties along the border—including Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan, and Sligo—as well as those in the Midlands, were found to be well below the national average in terms of household disposable income.
Widening Income Gap Between Counties
One of the most striking findings in the report is the growing income gap between Ireland’s highest- and lowest-earning counties. The difference in per capita income has now reached €10,136, marking an increase of €1,597 compared to 2022. This widening gap underscores the regional economic imbalances that persist despite overall national growth.
