Hosepipe Ban Introduced in Three Counties Amid Critically Low Water Levels
Dublin: A six-week hosepipe ban has been implemented in parts of Donegal, Meath, and Westmeath due to a significant drop in water levels, Uisce Éireann has announced.
The water conservation order affects Milford, Mullingar, and Kells-Oldcastle, where key water sources—Lough Owel, Lough Colmcille, and Lough Bane—are at their lowest levels in decades following an unusually dry autumn, winter, and spring.
Uisce Éireann has introduced measures such as leak repairs, pressure management, and public awareness campaigns to protect essential water supplies.
Head of Water Operations, Margaret Attridge, urged the public to reduce non-essential usage, especially as summer demand rises, noting that an hour of hosepipe use equals a family’s daily water consumption.
She encouraged simple conservation efforts, such as taking shorter showers and reusing water for gardening.
