Multiple Explosions Reported Amid Escalating Tensions Between India and Pakistan
Lahore, Pakistan – Tensions flared further in the region as three explosions were reported late Thursday evening in the Gopal Nagar and Naseerabad areas near the Walton Airfield in Lahore. The blasts triggered widespread panic, with sirens blaring across the city and videos circulating online showing thick plumes of smoke and residents fleeing their homes.
Initial reports suggest the explosions may have been the result of a drone strike. While no casualties or significant structural damage have yet been officially confirmed, eyewitness accounts indicate that much of the city is currently blanketed in smoke.
Pakistan has accused India of carrying out a drone-based attack aimed at military facilities near the Walton Airfield. Pakistani authorities claim to have shot down the drone and have vowed to respond decisively. According to a military spokesperson, the targeted site was near a cantonment area, raising concerns of a deliberate provocation.
Airspace Closures and Escalation Measures
In response to the incident and escalating hostilities, Pakistan has closed its airspace entirely for 48 hours. The ban, enforced by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, applies to all domestic and international commercial flights, with the exception of essential services. Islamabad and Rawalpindi, home to key civilian and military installations, are included in the lockdown.
India, in turn, has taken significant precautions. The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has suspended operations at 27 airports in sensitive northern and western regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. All scheduled flights at these airports have been cancelled until Saturday morning, affecting at least 430 flights in one day alone.

- Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh: Srinagar, Jammu, Leh
- Punjab and Himachal Pradesh: Amritsar, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Patiala, Pathankot, Dharamsala, Shimla, Gaggal, Bhuntar
- Rajasthan: Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Kishangarh, Bikaner
- Gujarat: Jamnagar, Rajkot, Porbandar, Bhuj, Keshod, Mundra
- Madhya Pradesh and NCR: Gwalior, Hindon, Ghaziabad
Several international airlines, including carriers from the Gulf region and Southeast Asia, have rerouted flights to avoid Pakistani and northwest Indian airspace, further disrupting global flight operations.
Security on High Alert
India has placed the border states of Rajasthan and Punjab on high alert, anticipating potential retaliatory actions from Pakistan. All police leaves have been cancelled, and local authorities have imposed restrictions on public gatherings. The Indian Air Force has been placed on heightened alert, and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel along the 1,037-kilometre Rajasthan-Pakistan border have been authorised to use lethal force in response to any suspicious activity.
