Dublin Airport Warns Travellers to Sign Passports to Avoid Travel Disruptions
Dublin – Passengers departing from Dublin Airport are being urged to ensure their passports are properly signed, as failure to do so may lead to travel disruptions.
Under current regulations, it is mandatory for all passport holders to sign their passports before boarding a flight. This requirement has been in place since the introduction of the redesigned Irish passport in 2013, which includes a designated space for a signature on the third page. However, many travellers remain unaware of the change, mistakenly believing the signature should be placed on the central data page, as was the case in older passport versions.
Authorities are reminding travellers that signing the passport is an essential step in confirming their identity and validating the document for official use. The recommended method is to use a black ballpoint pen to sign clearly in the allocated space.
Special guidance for children’s passports:
Parents are advised to familiarise themselves with age-specific rules regarding child passports. When a new passport is issued, it must be signed by the holder. For children, if they are able to sign, they should do so themselves. If the child is too young or unable to sign, the signature section may be left blank.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has also confirmed that the Irish passport is currently undergoing a redesign, with the updated version expected to be launched by the end of 2025. At present, passports issued to citizens aged 18 and over remain valid for 10 years.
Travellers are strongly encouraged to review their passport details well in advance of travel to avoid unnecessary delays at the airport.
