Government Targets 10-Week Driving Test Wait Time by September
Dublin: Minister of State Seán Canney has announced biweekly reviews with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to ensure progress toward reducing the national driving test wait time to 10 weeks by early September. The current average wait stands at 22 weeks, down from 27 in April.
Efforts to cut delays include expanding test hours to early mornings, evenings, and weekends. The RSA has introduced 41 new testers, with 50 more set to join in the coming months. Staff have also volunteered to work on Saturdays and bank holiday Mondays.
RSA COO Brendan Walsh attributed the backlog to a surge in demand, with testing volumes rising from 160,000 in 2021 to 250,000 in 2023. Plans are also underway to open additional test centres nationwide to meet demand.
