Tensions Escalate Between Iran, Israel, and the U.S. Amid Ceasefire as War of Words Intensifies
Washington: As a fragile ceasefire holds on the ground, a diplomatic and rhetorical confrontation is escalating between Iran, Israel, and the United States. In recent statements, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared that Iran had emerged victorious from the 12-day conflict with Israel, calling it a decisive blow to both Tel Aviv and Washington. The remarks have sparked sharp responses from Israeli and American leaders, reigniting tensions despite a temporary halt in military action.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump strongly rebuked Khamenei’s claim, describing it as “ungrateful” and “foolish”. Trump also warned that the United States would resume military strikes if Iran continued to pursue nuclear weapons, asserting that all efforts to ease sanctions had been halted as a result of Iran’s rhetoric.
Trump Claims to Have Spared Khamenei’s Life
In an extraordinary statement, Trump claimed that during the conflict he had prevented a targeted assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei by either Israeli or American forces. “I knew exactly where he was hiding. I did not allow Israel or the U.S. military to take his life,” Trump said. “I saved him from a very ugly, terrible death,” he added, accusing Khamenei of responding with ingratitude.
The U.S. president also stated that he was willing to resume diplomatic talks with Iran as early as next week. Reports have surfaced that Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has initiated informal contact with Iranian intermediaries to explore the possibility of a broader peace agreement, though Tehran has denied any such negotiations are underway.
Iran Rejects U.S. Claims, Suspends Nuclear Cooperation
In a televised address, Ayatollah Khamenei maintained that Iran had achieved a symbolic and strategic victory in its confrontation with Israel, and that U.S. influence in the region had been “severely weakened”. He dismissed Trump’s statements as “exaggerated and untrue” and said that any claims of U.S. restraint or success were “a misrepresentation of reality”.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also denied any ongoing or upcoming negotiations with the United States, stating on national television that talk of renewed discussions was “speculative and baseless”. In a further move, the Iranian parliament passed legislation temporarily suspending cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a sign of growing defiance in Tehran.
Alleged Damage to Nuclear Facilities
Trump claimed that recent U.S. airstrikes had destroyed critical nuclear infrastructure, including the underground Fordow uranium enrichment facility. However, unconfirmed reports suggest that Iran had removed nearly 400 kilograms of enriched uranium from several key sites prior to the bombings, raising international concerns that nuclear materials may now be stored elsewhere.
While Iran has denied any significant damage, the U.S. administration insists the strikes dealt a serious blow to Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Trump dismissed the idea that Iran had successfully concealed nuclear material as “pure speculation”.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed Trump’s sentiments, claiming a “historic victory” over Iran. He asserted that Iran’s missile strikes had been repelled and that Israeli defences, including the Iron Dome, had “withstood the challenge”. Netanyahu also warned that Israel would respond decisively to any future aggression.
