Europe Gripped by Severe Heatwave: Italy Bans Outdoor Work, France Shuts Schools, Spain Issues Health Alert
Brussels: A severe heatwave continues to disrupt life across Europe, prompting emergency measures in several countries. Italy has imposed a ban on outdoor work, and France has closed hundreds of schools as temperatures soar to dangerous levels. Spain, meanwhile, has recorded its highest-ever June temperature, prompting a nationwide health alert.
Outdoor Work Banned in Italy After Worker’s Death
The decision to halt outdoor labour in Italy follows the death of a construction worker near Bologna, believed to have suffered heatstroke. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with trade unions demanding stronger protections for workers amid rising temperatures. In response, the Italian government has issued red heat alerts for 17 cities, including major urban centres like Rome and Milan.
In another tragic case, a woman with a pre-existing heart condition collapsed and died while walking in Bagheria, Sicily. Authorities suspect heatstroke as the cause.
Schools Shut Down in France
In France, nearly 200 schools were closed after forecasts warned of temperatures reaching 40–41°C in several regions. Officials cited student safety and the inability of many school buildings to remain cool during extreme weather as reasons for the closures.
Record-Breaking Heat in Spain
Spain’s national weather agency (AEMET) reported an unprecedented high of 30°C in June, exceeding the seasonal average by six degrees. The extreme heat is attributed to a meteorological phenomenon known as a “heat dome”, which traps hot air over a region and intensifies temperatures.
Europe Warming at Alarming Rate
According to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, Europe is the fastest-warming continent, with temperatures rising at twice the global average. The increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves pose significant risks to public health, infrastructure, and economic productivity.
