Racist Attack on Indian Man in Dublin Sparks Outrage
Dublin – Just a week after a horrific knife attack left a young man dismembered and dumped on a roadside, another violent assault has shocked the immigrant community in the Irish capital. Dr. Santosh Yadav (32), a senior data scientist from India, was brutally attacked by a gang of teenagers in the Lucan Liffey Valley area on Sunday night.
This comes days after a similar unprovoked assault in Kilnamanagh on July 19, where another Indian man was seriously injured. Dr. Yadav, who moved to Ireland in 2021, was assaulted with what appeared to be a bicycle chain and a two-wheeler, suffering fractures to his cheekbone, internal injuries, and bruising across his body. He was admitted to Blanchardstown Hospital and discharged on Monday evening.
Lack of Garda Action Sparks Criticism
Dr. Yadav revealed that despite reporting the assault, no Garda officer has taken his formal statement. Gardaí contacted him twice asking if he could come to the station, but no officers have visited him in person, despite his injuries preventing travel.
“I’m paying 40% tax and contributing to this society. And yet I feel unsafe walking in Dublin,” said Dr. Yadav. “There’s no sign the government is trying to control anti-social elements.”
Teresa Buczkowska, CEO of the Immigrant Council of Ireland, expressed deep concern over the rise in racially motivated attacks, particularly targeting the Indian community. She called for urgent reforms in hate crime legislation and criticised the Gardaí’s outdated systems and lack of training in handling such incidents.
“Victims should be able to report at any convenient Garda station, but even that isn’t facilitated,” she said. “Ireland is a welcoming country, but these attacks and lack of action undermine that message.”
Public and Political Outcry
The incident has triggered protests across Dublin, with members of the Indian community and local leaders demanding immediate government action. Critics argue that the state’s lack of urgency and accountability emboldens such attacks and fails to ensure safety for immigrants.
The situation remains tense as calls grow for the government to address systemic shortcomings in policing, reporting, and preventing hate crimes.
