Ireland India Council Urges Government Action Over Rise in Racial Attacks
Dublin: The chairperson of the Ireland India Council, Prashant Shukla, has raised alarm over a surge in racially motivated attacks on the Indian community in the greater Dublin area, urging the government to deliver an “immediate and coordinated state response”.
Tallaght Assault Sparks Renewed Calls for Reform
Following a violent unprovoked attack on an Indian man in Tallaght on July 19—believed to be linked to four similar incidents—the Council has written to Tánaiste Simon Harris and Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan. It is calling for formal recognition of hate crimes, a cross-departmental task force, and new laws holding parents criminally and financially responsible for repeated violent behaviour by minors.
Escalating Fear Among Indian Residents
Shukla reported receiving multiple daily complaints of assaults and harassment on streets, buses, and in residential areas. “People are now afraid to step outside during daylight,” he said, citing serious injuries and a growing climate of fear.
Condemns Misinformation on Housing Crisis
He condemned false narratives blaming Indian nationals for Ireland’s housing issues, calling such claims “divisive and inflammatory”. He highlighted the positive contributions of Indian professionals, especially in healthcare and multinational sectors.
Warning Against Extremist Narratives
Shukla warned that extremist ideologies are fuelling social polarisation and undermining Ireland’s reputation for fairness and compassion. While supporting managed immigration, he emphasised the importance of genuine integration and preserving Irish identity.
Call for Urgent Government Meeting
The Council is seeking an urgent meeting with government officials, warning that failure to act could normalise violence and damage Ireland’s global image. “Fear has replaced trust. Immigrants feel under siege,” Shukla said. “We must act now to preserve social harmony and public confidence.”
