Custody Extended for Man Accused of Stabbing Garda
Dublin: The custody of Abdullah Khan (23), a North Dublin resident arrested in connection with the stabbing of a Garda officer last week, has been extended by one month. Cloverhill District Court ordered that he remain in custody until the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) issues a recommendation. The next hearing is scheduled for 3 September.
Khan is accused of stabbing a probationary Garda who was on patrol with a colleague in Dublin city centre. While the officer’s injuries were not life-threatening, they required hospital treatment. Khan has been charged with assaulting a police officer and possessing a tactical knife capable of causing serious injury, though a formal charge sheet has yet to be filed.
The alleged attack occurred on Capel Street at around 6 p.m. on 29 July. Khan was arrested at the scene and remanded in custody without bail. He appeared before the court’s Second Division via video link. Judge Cronin noted that DPP directions had not yet been received.
Detective Sergeant Liam McLoughlin of Bridewell Garda Station told the court that, with the defendant’s consent, he could be remanded for a further four weeks. Khan agreed to the extension.
When Khan was first brought before the court, a restriction on publishing his address was imposed due to security concerns.
