Kevin O’Brien, Irish Leaders Condemn Racial Attacks on Indian Community
Dublin: Former Irish cricketer Kevin O’Brien has joined political and religious leaders in condemning recent racially motivated attacks on the Indian community in Ireland. In a statement on X, O’Brien said he was “deeply saddened” by the rise in such incidents, describing them as unrepresentative of Irish values. “India and its people hold a very special place in my heart. Ireland is your home too, and your contribution to our society is immense,” he said, recalling the warmth shown to Irish teams in India.

His remarks follow strong condemnation from President Michael D. Higgins, who labelled the attacks “despicable” and “in stark contradiction” to Ireland’s principles. Higgins praised the Indian community’s role in healthcare, business, culture, and public life, calling their presence “a source of enrichment and generosity.”
Catholic Archbishop of Dublin Dermot Farrell also expressed solidarity, noting many Indians serve in essential services. He urged the public to support Gardaí in identifying offenders, stressing there is “no place” for racially motivated abuse. Farrell acknowledged both verbal harassment and physical attacks, urging parishes, communities, and schools to strengthen integration and reject discrimination.
The condemnations come amid a spate of reported assaults and harassment targeting Indians, sparking calls for stronger community action and law enforcement measures.
