Trump-Putin Summit Ends Without Breakthrough on Ukraine
Alaska: The much-anticipated summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded without delivering any significant outcomes, dashing global hopes for a breakthrough on the war in Ukraine or progress towards a ceasefire.
Despite expectations, the two leaders offered no concrete announcements following their talks, stating only that there had been “progress on some issues”. President Putin remarked that the discussions could help pave the way toward resolving the Ukraine crisis and restoring Russia-US relations but emphasised the need to eliminate “paths of conflict” for lasting peace—an indication that Moscow remains unwilling to commit to an immediate ceasefire.
President Trump, speaking to Fox News after the summit, suggested that a temporary delay in Chinese tariffs on Russian oil was under consideration, though no decision had been finalised. He did not address the 50 percent tariff already imposed on Indian imports.
The meeting marked the first encounter between a sitting US president and Putin since the war in Ukraine began. Trump also hinted at a possible three-way meeting involving Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and himself, raising cautious optimism about renewed diplomacy.
“We are very close to a deal,” Trump said, while acknowledging that Ukraine’s leadership might “say they are not ready for it.”
