Hundreds Feared Dead After Powerful Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan
Nangarhar: A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Kunar–Nangarhar border region of eastern Afghanistan early this morning, leaving widespread devastation in its wake.
According to initial assessments, between 250 and 500 people have been killed, while hundreds more have been injured. The epicentre was reported near Jalalabad, with tremors causing severe damage across multiple villages. Homes have collapsed, roads have been destroyed, and several areas remain cut off.
The Homeland Security Force and the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed to lead search and rescue operations. However, efforts are being hampered by mountainous terrain and flooded roads, slowing access to the worst-hit communities.
Afghanistan has long been identified by experts as one of the world’s most earthquake-prone regions. Officials fear that the current death toll will rise significantly as rescue teams reach more remote areas.
The disaster comes as a stark reminder of the country’s vulnerability, following the 2023 earthquake, which claimed thousands of lives. Authorities have described today’s quake as another major humanitarian test for the nation.
