Low Voter Turnout Marks Ireland’s Presidential Election; Counting Underway

Dublin: Voter turnout in Friday’s Irish presidential election is estimated to have ranged between 30% and 40%, according to preliminary figures from polling stations across the country. More than 3.6 million people were eligible to vote at over 5,500 polling stations, but official turnout data has yet to be released by the Election Commission.

Vote counting began at 9 a.m. today (Saturday), with the final results expected by this evening.

Regional Turnout Overview

In rural Monaghan, the constituency of Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys, turnout exceeded 60%, while Killiney reported one of the highest figures nationally at 72%. Independent frontrunner Catherine Connolly cast her vote at the Claddagh polling station in Galway City.

West and Midlands

Turnout in the West and Midlands remained slow through the morning but picked up in the afternoon.

• Galway West: 40% average turnout (Salthill 47%, Knocknacarra 44%, Moycullen 43%, Clifden 36%)
• Galway East: Highest in Kinvara (47%), Tuam (31%), Athenry (42%)
• Castlerea, Boyle, Ballinasloe: 25% average turnout

Dublin

Turnout in Dublin averaged 43%, slightly higher than in 2018.

• Dublin City constituencies: 38% average (Bay North 48.9%, South Central 38.2%, Central 37%, North West 34.7%, Bay South 31.7%)
• County Dublin constituencies: 47% average (Fingal East 49.6%, Dún Laoghaire 49.4%, Rathdown 48.6%, Fingal West 48.5%, Midwest 48.4%, West 43.5%, South West 41.5%)

Other Counties

• Mayo: 30.2%
• Longford: 35% (Ballymahon 35.06%, Kenagh 35%)
• Westmeath: 40–50% (Mullingar 40%, Taghmon NS 50%, Gaelscoil 45%, Collinstown 40%, Castlepollard 42%)

Cork

In Cork City, turnout reached 44.6% in South Central and 36.8% in North Central—the constituency of Prime Minister Michael Martin. Across the three Cork constituencies, average turnout stood at 38.5%.

Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Kerry

• Limerick City: 42–43% (Ennis Road, Caherdavin); rural Bruff, Ballylanders, Templeglantine around 40%
• Clare: 36% in Ennis, 39% in Cratloe, 33% in Murragh and Abbeyfeale, 22% in Moyross
• Waterford: Ballygunner 40%, Farronshoneen 38.5%, Scoil Lorcáin 34%, Cappoquin–Tallow–Lismore 34%
• Tipperary: Clonmel 37.5%, Nenagh 32%, Tipperary Town 29%, Thurles 31%, Ballina 37%
• Kerry: Killarney 48%, Tralee 38%, Dingle (Daingean Uí Chúis) 42%, Listowel 33%.
