Ireland Steps Up Workplace Inspections to Crack Down on Illegal Employment

Dublin: Authorities in Ireland are intensifying workplace inspections to identify and prevent illegal employment, with particular attention being paid to sectors such as hospitality, restaurants, fast-food outlets and ethnic food businesses.

The inspections, particularly in Dublin and other major urban areas, are aimed at identifying workers who have overstayed their immigration permission, exceeded the working hours permitted under their student visas or used fraudulent documents to secure employment.

Officials are also examining cases involving people who do not yet have permission to work but may have obtained employment through informal networks. Concerns have been raised that some vulnerable migrants may be offered jobs for low wages before they have secured the necessary immigration or employment permissions.

Hospitality sector under particular scrutiny

Food and hospitality businesses have been among the sectors facing increased attention, with workers from a range of Asian and African countries reportedly among those encountered during inspections.

However, officials have stressed that immigration status must be assessed on an individual basis. Some people found working without valid permission may have entered Ireland legally but subsequently lost or failed to renew their entitlement to work.

Authorities have warned that inspections will continue across sectors where illegal employment is suspected.
