Dáil passed proposal to impose fines on people who violate Covid guidelines

Dáil passed a new proposal to impose fines on those who violate Covid regulations. The bill was passed by 85 votes to 53.

The bill, which was passed without amendment, will be approved by the Seanad, and the system of fines for violators of the Covid rules will be introduced in Ireland.

Earlier, legislation was enacted to avoid crowds near pubs, restaurants and liquor stores and to ensure vigilance instructions, but no fines were imposed on violators.

However, with the implementation of the law, the number of consecutive offenders has dropped dramatically.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee said the new system which impose fines on violators and almost similar to that of the previous one.

“For those who are adhering to the guidelines, these regulations won’t apply to them. But those who are continuously breaking guidelines are putting others’ health at risk, there needs to be a very clear sanction.” he said.

The decision was made to impose a fine of 500 euros on first-time violators. Consecutive violators can be fined up to 2,500 or sentenced to up to six months in prison.

He says the government is asking the people to cooperate as much as possible, but they had decided to impose fines to teach a lesson to those who behave irresponsibly.

The minister also added that people should strictly abide by public health guidelines and stay at home and not go out unnecessarily.

“Those who are not breaching any guidelines will not come into contact with the Gardaí or with this legislation, but for those who are, we do need to send a message,” he concluded.
