WhatsApp is a globally used messaging service and more than two billion people uses it on a daily basis. The latest update provided the consumers an opportunity to pick a choice on whether to keep their messages in chat or allow them to delete after a week.
Recently WhatsApp messages could be erased manually but, the latest update will enable the setup that will erase the messages automatically. This move from WhatsApp is said to be step to ramp up its challenge to ‘Snapchat’, another messaging application.
A WhatsApp blog post quoted that: “Today, WhatsApp messages often live on our phones forever. While it’s great to hold onto memories from friends and family, most of what we send doesn’t need to be everlasting.”
The blog also said that their goal is to make conversations on WhatsApp feel as close to in-person as possible, which means they shouldn’t have to stick around forever.
A similar feature was introduced by Facebook for its Messenger platform and it was widely welcomed by the smartphone users.
WhatsApp chose a seven-day period “because we think it offers peace of mind that conversations aren’t permanent, while remaining practical so you don’t forget what you were chatting about.”
The recent move from WhatsApp is considered as a surviving technology, because a survey of US teens last month showed Snapchat is their favourite social media platform. Thus, by introducing a feature like this in WhatsApp might increase its acceptance amongst the youths.
The survey also found that TickTock has became the second favorites by pushing down Instagram.
