DUBLIN: A financial technology company found that, on average, people in Ireland spent a total of €63.18 on Irish websites on this year’s Black Friday, with €90.37 going to foreign ones.

According to the tech firm, Revolut, expenditure on physical transactions has dropped by 29% this year as most retailers in the country have closed as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

The company’s latest data show that spending on Irish websites on Black Friday is up 135%from a year earlier. They also reveal that overall online spending has increased by 81%.

Statistics indicate that the number of people who have done local shopping this year is low compared to last year. The company said that 39% of Revolut users’ online spending last Friday went to Irish websites. Last year it was 28%. However, the data also reveals that the remaining 61% of online spend still went to foreign web pages.

Among the Irish-based retailers that have benefited the most from Black Friday sales are Smyths Toys, Sosu.ie and Lifestyle Sports. At the same time Amazon, ASOS and Nike.com topped the list of foreign websites.
