World Cup qualification; Ireland will play against Portugal and Serbia
Ireland will face Portugal and Serbia in the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Ireland last played in a World Cup qualifier in 2002. Team A, led by manager Stephen Kenny, will also face Luxembourg and Azerbaijan in the qualifiers.
The competitions will be held from March to November 2021.
Following on the defeat in the UEFA Nations League, Qatar will face a tough challenge to win the World Cup qualifiers against Ireland.
Ireland last played Portugal in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers. The home and away matches ended in a 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, in the World Cup qualifiers, Northern Ireland are in a strong group that includes Italy, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Lithuania. Scotland is part of a group that includes Denmark, Austria, Israel, the Faroe Islands and Moldova.
Wales will face Belgium, the world number one team in Group E, along with the Czech Republic, Belarus and Estonia. England are in a group that includes Poland, Hungary, Albania, Andorra and San Marino.
The group winners will meet in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in November and December.
The top two teams in the Nations League and the three teams selected from the runners-up in the qualifying matches will play against each other at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Group A: Portugal, Serbia, Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg, Azerbaijan.
Group B: Spain, Sweden, Greece, Georgia, Kosovo.
Group C: Italy, Switzerland, Northern Ireland, Bulgaria, Lithuania.
Group D: France, Ukraine, Finland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kazakhstan.
Group E: Belgium, Wales, Czech Republic, Belarus, Estonia.
Group F: Denmark, Austria, Scotland, Israel, Faroe Islands, Moldova.
Group G: Holland, Turkey, Norway, Montenegro, Latvia, Gibraltar.
Group H: Croatia, Slovakia, Russia, Slovenia, Cyprus, Malta.
Group I: England, Poland, Hungary, Albania, Andorra, San Marino.
Group J: Germany, Romania, Iceland, North Macedonia, Armenia, Liechtenstein.
