Dr Dermot Farrell, the new Archbishop of Dublin

Dr Dermot Farrell named as the new Archbishop of Dublin. Dr Dermot Farrell will take over from Diarmuid Martin soon.

The announcement was made in a statement from the Vatican this morning (Tuesday).

Dr Dermot Farrell (66) is the successor to Archbishop Diarmuid Martin and Dr Farrell will take charge of the country’s largest diocese.

There are indications that the transfer will take place at the beginning of the new year. Dr Farrell is currently the Bishop of the Diocese of Osori (Kilkenny).

Dr Dermot Farrell was born in 1954 in Garthy, Castletown-Geogen, Countymeet.

He was ordained a priest in the diocese of Meath in 1980. He received his doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University in Trenton. In 1993, he was appointed Vice President of St. Patrick’s College, Maine.

He served as president of the National Seminary until 2007. He continued in this position until his appointment to Osori in 2018.

He has also served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Alliance Insurance Board, National University of Ireland, and Maine, and on various boards and committees. The current Archbishop is the chairman of Veritas.
