COVID-19 vaccine: Officials say side effects not matter compared to benefits; 81 cases were reported in Ireland

DUBLIN: Side effects of COVID-19 vaccination have begun to be reported. However, the Department of Health advises that the risks can be taken lightly compared to the benefits provided by the vaccine.

As of January 11, Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) had reported 81 side effects related to the BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. In all reports, the side effects were similar to those of other common vaccines.

Abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue, joint pain, joint pain, dizziness, headache and itching have been reported, said Dr Lorraine Nolan from the HPRA of the National Public Health Emergency Team. As of January 14, 77,000 COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech have been administered in Ireland. The safety of COVID-19 vaccines is closely monitored.

“Internationally, there have been reports of anaphylaxis associated with the use of messenger RNA vaccines,” Dr. Nolan said. Anaphylaxis is a known side effect that can happen with vaccination for people with severe allergies.

“It is important to stress that this is very rare. And as is the case for all vaccines, vaccination centres are well prepared for such events. As always, when discussing potential side effects, we must remember the risks they present is significantly outweighed by the health risk posed by the virus itself. However, it is vital that this information is not misconstrued, or inadvertently interpreted to become misinformation.”

Dr. Nolan explained that there are four key components to testing the safety of vaccines: analysis of suspicious side effects and adverse events, monitoring of safety reports and studies, and engaging with other organizations, such as the World Health Organization, to ensure access to the latest global safety information.
