About half a dozen parakeets are regular visitors to a garden in Dublin

DUBLIN: About half a dozen parakeets are regular visitors to a garden in Dublin. For the past 12 months, Cathal Mac an Bheatha have been filming it and feeding the guests regularly in her garden at Fairview.

Native to Africa and Asia, the green ring-necked parakeets are now widely present in many European cities and London. Last year, this species was first recorded in the Irish Garden Bird Survey.

BirdWatch Ireland says ring-necked parakeets can adapt better than parakeets in colder climates. They eat a variety of fruits, berries, nuts, seeds, grain and household food scraps.

This bird is considered an invasive species. Authorities have suggested that anyone who sees them anywhere should immediately post on the National Biodiversity Center’s website.
