Death toll from COVID-19 in Ireland has crossed 3000; further 90 deaths and 928 new cases confirmed yesterday

DUBLIN: The death toll from COVID-19 infection in Ireland has crossed 3,000. The number of deaths from the onset of the Pandemic has now risen to 3,066, with NPHET confirming 90 new deaths yesterday.

“Today we are reporting a further 90 deaths, bringing our cumulative total of lives lost to Covid-19 to more than 3,000 in Ireland,” chief medical officer Dr. Tony Holohan said.

A further 928 COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the country yesterday. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 189,851.

Half of yesterday’s cases were under 45 years of age. The median age of those who died is 83 years and the age range is 48-99 years.

The capital recorded 257 new cases. Of the remaining cases, 115 were in Cork, 71 in Louth, 53 in Galway, 45 in Limerick. The rest of the cases are spread across all other counties.

A total of 1,750 patients with COVID-19 were hospitalised. Of these, 216 are in ICU. The 14-day virus rate in Ireland is 721.1 per lakh.

At the same time, the National Public Health Emergency Team said that six additional cases were related to the South African variant.

“This highly infectious disease is having a severe impact on the most vulnerable in our society and we must continue the good work we are doing to suppress it,” CMO said. Dr. Holohan also urged everyone to continue following public health advice to protect themselves and their loved ones.
