Google to set up new Safety Engineering Centre in Dublin to ensure security on platforms; more jobs will be created
DUBLIN: Google is launching a new Safety Engineering Centre in Dublin as part of its management of security on its platforms. The new facility is being developed to function as a regional hub for those dealing with the spread of illegal and harmful content.
It is Google’s second global safety engineering hub and the first in Ireland. In 2019, a similar facility was launched in Munich. If the center in Munich is focused on building tools to protect users’ privacy and security, the Dublin Center will focus on content.
The Munich safety engineering centre currently has more than 200 employees. Similarly, the facility being started in the capital is expected to lead to huge investment and job creation. Presently, more than 20,000 employees worldwide work in the trust and safety of the technology giant. Of these, about 8,000 are from Ireland.
The American multinational technology company says in a statement: “The new Dublin center will be a regional hub for Google experts working to tackle the spread of illegal and harmful content and a place where we can share this work with policymakers, researchers, and regulators.”
The company said the new center aims to provide greater transparency in search engine operations to enhance Internet security using technology and artificial intelligence.
Google’s trust and safety teams are already in Dublin. The company also mentioned that it intends to invite regulators, policy makers, academics and civil society groups to the Dublin Center to learn more about Google’s operations once the COVID-19 pandemic has ended.
In addition, as part of the development, Google announced a new partnership with the Irish Research Council. This will fund research into internet safety.
