Passengers who arrive from abroad are required to undergo RT-PCR test at Indian airports; Expatriates in protest
KOCHI: Expatriate Indians oppose the Government of India’s policy of re-testing RT-PCR test clearers at their own expense.
The new protocol system was launched from yesterday.
Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden demanded that RT-PCR tests be conducted at the expense of the government, which is tantamount to imposing a double burden on expatriates. He said the government’s action was more disappointing for expatriates who had lost their jobs and wages as the world went through a very severe economic crisis.
MP Hibi Eden therefore wrote to the Union Health Minister and the Chief Minister requesting that the costs of their RT-PCR tests be borne by the Central and State Governments.
Various laboratories charge between Rs 1,300 and Rs 1,500 for tests. The financial loss when more members of the same family return home is huge, he said.
The decision to re-test at Indian airports was taken with the aim of preventing the spread of COVID variants to India.
Meanwhile, the Central Health Department said that many people who came from abroad with negative certificates were tested positive for COVID-19 in India.
