European Commission President declared her support for donation of vaccines to health workers in Africa
European Commission President and French President have said they support South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s request that rich countries donate five percent of their vaccines to countries in need.
“Rich countries should donate five per cent of their vaccines to needy countries, particularly on our continent Africa,” said Cyril Ramaphosa, who also chairs the African Union.In response to President Ramaphosa’s request, French President Emmanuel Macron called on rich countries to donate vaccines to health workers in Africa.
Following Macron’s call, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared her support on Tuesday. “I support President Macron’s proposal to donate vaccine doses that are necessary to vaccinate healthcare workers in Africa,” Ms von der Leyen said.
The South African President’s request came after India first exported a locally produced COVID-19 shot to the COVAX vaccine distribution network on Tuesday. It also received support from the World Health Organization.
The global COVAX scheme aims to ensure a fair supply of vaccines to ensure that people are protected from the spread of the virus. The scheme highlights the challenge of distributing vaccines equally around the world.
The objective of COVAX is to deliver two billion vaccine doses worldwide by the end of this year. Health workers are the top priority, followed by the most vulnerable.
