15 crore swindled from Irish businesswoman in Tamil Nadu, India; four people, including general manager arrested
Madurai District Police arrested four people, including the general manager of an export company based in Thirumangalam, Tamil Nadu, for allegedly defrauding an Irish woman who owns the company. They were arrested in a case of embezzling Rs 15 crore from Frances Amanda Murphy from Ireland.
Teddy Exports started in Alangulam in 1992 and employs about 500 people. In addition, they run hospitals and schools. When she moved to Kodaikanal in 2014, he appointed N Gavaskar as General Manager to look after the company.
In 2015, she moved to London. For the period up to 2019, she only checked the annual statements presented by Gavaskar. She also cross-checked the accuracy of the information through his accountants and auditors. However, the police said they were all colluding with Gavaskar to defraud the owner of the company.
In 2019, she found that 15 crore is misappropriated. She found that Gavaskar and his family had misused the money and, with the help of a few employees, had purchased several properties in the name of his family members. Amanda then demanded a refund. He also agreed to pay it back.
But recently, as she insisted on payment, she was allegedly threatened with dire consequences. Amanda then lodged a complaint at the Thirumangalam police station. The case was registered against 17 people, including Gavaskar, his elder brother Rohan and their parents, auditor Meiyappan and Kondappan, accountants Baskar and Anandi, storekeeper Vijaya, computer operators Jegathalan, Arasi, Parimalam, contractor Sekar and driver Karupaiah.
The case has been registered under various sections of the IPC and Information Technology Act. Gavaskar, Rohan, Baskaran and Jegathalan have been arrested. Police officials said an investigation is underway.

Thirty years ago, Amanda Murphy left her hometown of Belfast, Ireland to start a school in Thirumangalam, Tamil Nadu.
Amanda first came to India in 1990 to visit his friend Anita Roddy. The two had done some volunteer work in India together.
In 30 years, Amanda has not only built a school for 700 students, but also started a €2.5 million teddy export business. Those entrusted to run the institution have now been arrested.
Amanda employs more than a thousand locals in various institutions here. Amanda is also a well-known social worker who is popular among the common people of southern Tamil Nadu.
