Number of COVID-19 cases in Ireland is declining; 14 deaths and 359 new cases confirmed yesterday
DUBLIN: The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) reports that 359 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed yesterday in Ireland. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 220,630.
Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronan Glynn said today’s figures show the lowest number of cases reported on a single day since mid-December.
The health department also confirmed that 14 more people died due to COVID-19. Three of the deaths occurred in March, 10 in February and one in November. With this, the death toll from Coronavirus now stands at 4,333.
Of the cases confirmed, 157 were men and 193 were women. 66% were under 45 years of age and the median age was 34 years old.
The highest number of cases were recorded in Dublin (59). Of the remaining cases, 25 were reported in Westmeath, 21 in Louth, 21 in Galway, 19 in Meath and the remaining 114 cases are spread across 19 other counties.
A total of 498 COVID-19 patients were hospitalised, with 116 in ICU. This is the first time in 2021 that the number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital has dropped below 500.
Ireland has a 14-day incidence rate of 201.2 cases per 100,000 people today. The highest incidence rate was recorded in Offally (401.5) and the lowest in Kilkenny (77.6).
The Deputy CMO Dr. Ronan Glynn said: “While the low number of cases reported today may be attributable to a weekend effect, it is nevertheless very welcome and represents the lowest number of cases reported on a single day since mid-December.
“While we continue to make good progress in Ireland, globally in the past week, the number of cases of Covid-19 has increased for the first time in seven weeks. We must not allow this virus the opportunity to do the same here.”
“Please hold firm to the public health advice and together we can continue to protect and build on the progress we have made over the last two months,” he said.
