DUBLIN: The company has announced that by 2030, all Volvo cars will be fully electric. By 2025, 50% of global sales will be entirely electric cars. The other half will be hybrid models, the Swedish-based Chinese carmaker said.
Headquartered in Gothenburg, Volvo is set to launch a new family of electric cars in the next few years. All of these will be sold online only. The first of these models was released recently. The C40, a fully electric SUV, has an initial battery range of 420 km.
Volvo’s new electric models will include wireless upgrades and solutions. This approach was originally proposed by electric car maker Tesla, Inc. Henrik Green, chief technology officer, said the C40’s range would be expanded over time with software upgrades.
Volvo Chief Executive Hokan Samuelson said he is fully convinced that there will be no customers who want to stay with the petrol engine in the future.
In addition to reducing CO2 emissions in Europe and China, bans on fossil fuel vehicles in some countries are prompting the company to switch to zero-emission models.
Ford Motor Company has also announced that its line-up in Europe will be fully electric by 2030. Jaguar Land Rover, part of Tata Motors, has announced that the Jaguar luxury brand will be fully electric by 2025.
Bentley, the luxury car maker owned by Germany’s Volkswagen, announced in November that all of its models would be electric by 2030.
At the same time, there are concerns that electric vehicles will reduce employment opportunities in the car industry.
