COVID-19 vaccines that do not require needles may be available later this year – WHO
The World Health Organization (WHO) says the COVID-19 vaccine, which does not require a needle and can be stored at room temperature, will be available later this year. Six to eight new vaccines will be able to complete clinical trials and be approved by the end of the year.
These vaccines will be administered without the use of a needle. It comes with a nasal spray and a patch to be placed on the skin. These vaccines are better suited for people who are scared of needles, as well as some groups such as pregnant women.
The new update on COVID vaccine was released by Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the WHO’s Geneva headquarters. Dr. Swaminathan said the WHO is happy with the current vaccines but that they could be improved further. She believes that “improved vaccines” will be available in 2022.
Dr. Swaminathan, who is known for her research on tuberculosis and HIV said: “We need to continue to support the research and development of more vaccine candidates, especially as the need for ongoing booster immunization of populations is still not very clear at this point. So we need to be prepared for that in the future.”
Meanwhile, the WHO is examining whether people who have previously been infected with the virus need two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The scientist noted that while this may free up supply, it may pose “practical and logistical” problems in certain countries if blood tests are necessary to measure a patient’s antibody levels.
