Ireland’s mandatory quarantine law will go into effect next week; agreements were reached with hotels

DUBLIN: Members of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) have warned that from next week, foreign travelers, including those coming through the UAE, will have to stay in hotels as part of the mandatory quarantine rule.

Although the hotel quarantine directive applies to all travellers arriving in Ireland, the law will initially apply only to visitors from 33 countries, including the UAE.

The suggestion to make the law applicable to people from all countries was raised at the NPHET meeting on February 18.

The government has signed an agreement with hotels as part of the implementation of the scheme. The agreement was reached with Tifco Hotel Group. They have 24 hotel properties. The group will provide 2550 hotel rooms for quarantine purposes.

The group will provide transportation to hotels, security, testing facilities, and food for those who have to quarantine. The hotels include the Crowne Plaza, and the Holiday Inn Express next to Dublin Airport, and Travelodge Hotels at both Dublin and Cork airports.

The Public Expenditure Michael McGrath said the mandatory quarantine could be implemented by the end of this week. Many travellers come here from high-risk countries such as Brazil and South Africa. The Minister revealed that the compulsory quarantine law is being implemented to avoid risk from them.

Currently, 33 countries, including Africa and South America, are on the Government’s Category 2 list of “high risk” countries.

The other countries on the list are: Brazil, South Africa, Angola, Austria, Botswana, Burundi, Cape Verde, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Eswatini, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, United Arab Emirates, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
