Indian Community Center in Belfast is set to celebrate Holi online
BELFAST: The Indian Community Center in Belfast is brightening up the Holi celebration with virtual events despite the corona virus lockdown.
Today’s free virtual event will mark the cultural diversity of Belfast. The event takes place on Monday from 12 pm. to 1 pm. There will be a special performance of South Asian Dance Academy Indian dance and Rangoli, a popular Indian folk art used in cultural celebrations.
Life in Northern Ireland has been in lockdown since last March. Holi was the last event the community got to celebrate together before the coronavirus struck and changed everything. Later, everything went online, through zoom prayer meetings and virtual Bollywood singing sessions.
The Indian Community Center is today part of the Belfast City Council’s first PEACE IV Culture Café event. It is hoped that this will energize the Indian community, history and contribution to the city.
Celebration committee member Dr Satyavir Singhal said that the Indian community is happy to be able to mark Holi in Belfast again, albeit through an online event.
Holi, also known as the festival of colors and love, is a two-day celebration. It is a spring festival in Nepal and India. The night before, people are gathering, dancing and partying.
The next morning is celebrated as rangwali holi. Everyone races around, chases each other, and colors each other with dry powder and colored water. These are really the biggest highlights of the Holi celebration.
