Government to introduce digital green certificate vaccine pass to those who have been fully vaccinated
DUBLIN: The government is considering granting further exemptions from COVID-19 restrictions to those who have been fully vaccinated. Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said the government is developing a “digital green certificate vaccine pass” for this. In a video released on Easter Monday about the progress of the COVID-19 vaccination, the Tánaiste shared the idea of giving people hope.
The government has decided to issue digital green certificate vaccine pass to those who have been fully vaccinated. Those who receive this pass would have additional freedoms. The digital green pass will be presented as proof that people have been fully vaccinated. Mr. Varadkar also said Ireland’s vaccination program will accelerate in the coming weeks.
Ireland’s vaccination program has been troubled by issues, including criticism over its speed, problems with manufacturer deliveries, and controversy over queue skipping. But on Good Friday, the country set a record for vaccinations by administering 30,500 doses in a single day. This is the first time since the vaccination that so many people have been vaccinated a day. The government aims to complete the delivery of one million doses this week.
“We anticipate that by the middle of May the majority of adults will have had their first dose, and the over 70s will have been fully vaccinated. And by the end of June the vast, vast majority, more than 80 per cent of people, will have been offered the first dose,” the Tánaiste said.
“We’d hope to do even better than that as well and many will have their second dose too. So you know, really the acceleration phase, the ramp up phase is April, May and June. With the addition of the fourth vaccine, the single dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine that gets a little easier still,” he added.
As the vaccination progresses, we will have more options for re-opening. If the COVID case numbers continue to go in the right direction, Government will consider reopening of non-essential retail and barber shops. Religious services, contact sports, museums, galleries and libraries will also be considered, Varadkar said.
