Today’s NPHET meeting will discuss whether to take action against health workers who deny COVID-19 vaccination

DUBLIN: Indications are that health workers who refuse the COVID-19 vaccine may have to stay away from frontline operations. The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) will meet today to discuss recommendations for vaccination following reports that more health workers are refusing to be vaccinated.

Today’s meeting will consider the advice given by the Expert Advisory Council on the duration of immunity for COVID-19 and on the “additional freedom” that can be given to people who are fully vaccinated.

It is understood that the government’s proposal that meetings between two people who have been fully vaccinated can take place indoors or outdoors, as well as the suggestion that vaccinated people will not have full safety until at least two weeks after receiving the second dose of the vaccine, are also under further discussion.

A policy is likely to be formulated at today’s meeting that people who have been fully vaccinated do not need to restrict their movements even if they are in close contact with people who tested positive.

Today’s meeting also included a review of what other countries’ policies are on what action to take when health workers reject the vaccine.

While the government has stated that schools must reopen on April 12, the Department of Health is said to be opposed. Health officials are concerned about easing restrictions from next week, at a time when COVID-19 cases are increasing in Ireland. Health officials confirmed 423 COVID-19 cases and five deaths in Ireland yesterday.
