New ‘variable’ speed limits to be introduced on M50 and motorways; Road Traffic Bill coming soon…
DUBLIN: The government is planning to introduce new ‘variable’ speed limits on M50 route. The Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill is aimed at controlling the speed limit on motorways during rush hours and in case of accidents. Transport Minister Eamon Ryan said the new Bill would be introduced in Dail in the coming weeks.
The Bill will detail plans to increase and decrease speeds as needed on the motorway. Minister Ryan said variable limits would reduce tailbacks and gridlocks on the Dublin ring road. On certain sections of the motorway, the new speed limits could be lowered to 40 km/h during rush hour.
The variable speed limits on the motorway has been introduced since 2018. Transport Infrastructure Ireland had proposed a plan to reduce the speed to 60km/h to end gridlock.
Speed limit 30-40 km/h on main roads
The speed limit will be significantly reduced in many parts of Dublin’s northside as part of an effort to prevent road deaths. The speed limit in the city and suburbs will be 30km/h. In addition, a 40km/h limit will be in place on many northside roads. The new proposals will be debated and discussed with the public from today.
Last month, the road safety department proposed a speed limit of 40km/h on Griffith Avenue, Collins Avenue, Oscar Traynor Road and Malahide Road. The new proposal will include many northside roads including parts of Glasnevin Avenue, Howth Road, Coolock Lane, Grace Park Road, the coastal Clontarf Road and the Causeway Road out to Bull Island.
The speed limit for the rest of the city will be 30km/h. On some major approach roads, such as the N1 and N2, speeds of up to 50km/h and 60km/h will be retained with high restrictions. But when it reaches the city, the speed drops to 30km/h. A speed of up to 80km/h is allowed only on a section of the Chapelizod bypass and the entrance to the M1 motorway.
Public suggestions on proposals can be submitted to the Council from today.
