Over 100 electric and battery-powered trains expected to arrive in Ireland before 2025
DUBLIN: More than 100 electric and battery-powered trains are expected to arrive in Ireland by the end of 2024. Jim Meade, CEO of Irish Rail, has confirmed that orders for the trains will be placed soon.
Jim Meade said that one of the challenges we faced in 2018-19 was determining how to expand the network. According to him, this will be the “largest and greenest order” of public transport vehicles in Ireland’s history, and it is part of efforts to expand network capacity while taking environmental issues into account.
“We were coming towards capacity on the network – we were challenged in the morning and evening peaks, particularly in the greater Dublin area,” said Irish Rail’s CEO.
Mr. Meade said the trains will be ordered soon and are expected to arrive in Ireland in late 2024.
The Iarnród Éireann CEO is optimistic that the COVID-19 crisis will pass and that demand for public transport will increase. He also suggests that, while the number of COVID-19 cases in Ireland is declining, now is the time to start “building for the future”.
He also mentioned that work on the DART expansion programme, which aims to improve rail services in the greater Dublin region, is already underway.
