IPL postponed after several players and staff tested positive for COVID-19
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has plunged into a crisis as few players and staff members tested positive for coronavirus.
The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) has officially announced that the IPL has been suspended indefinitely due to an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases among players and staff members. The decision was taken at the BCCI meeting held today.
The first COVID-19 cases were detected yesterday in the Kolkata Knight Riders camp, when players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier tested positive. As a result, yesterday’s match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was postponed.
Subsequent tests revealed that bowling coach L Balaji and a member of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) service staff tested positive for COVID-19.
The decision to postpone the matches was made today after two other players, Wriddhiman Saha of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Amit Mishra of Delhi Capitals, tested positive for COVID-19. The main reason and concern is that cases have emerged within the bio-bubble.
Of the scheduled 56 league games, only 29 have been played this season. However, the BCCI confirmed that they does not want to “compromise on the safety of the players, support staff and other participants involved on organising the IPL.”
