President of Ireland and INMO paid tribute to nurses on International Nurses Day
DUBLIN: President Michael de Higgins paid tribute to nurses in Ireland and around the world on International Nurses Day yesterday. Mr. Higgins praised their “irreplaceable contribution” to health and well-being.
International Nurses Day is celebrated in memory of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Nightingale, a well-known British nurse, played a key role in the development of modern nursing.
The International Nurses Week was first observed in the US in October 1954 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Nightingale’s work during the Crimean War. She selflessly cared for injured soldiers, lowering the death rate from 42% to 2%.
Nurses are the heart of the healthcare sector, putting their lives on the line every day to help fight the coronavirus pandemic. Even after a year of COVID-19 pandemic stress and long working hours, they are still serving on the frontline to save each of our lives.
Tens of thousands of nurses and healthcare workers working in various fields and in various locations across Ireland have been facing unprecedented challenges since the onset of the pandemic.
The Irish Nurses & Midwives Organisation (INMO) thanked all members on Twitter for their inspiring commitment to their work and patients.
Epilepsy Ireland, an Irish charity that provides support, information, and advice to people with epilepsy, praised all nurses, especially those who work in epilepsy services across the country.
Bernadette Murphy, Operational Director of Nursing at University Hospital Limerick, said: “It’s really important to say that we are very proud of all of our healthcare workers”.
“But for today, being International Nurses Day, we want to celebrate our nurses and their commitment, their dedication and their care delivery to our patients at a very worrying time,” she added.
