The US space agency, NASA, has found water on the surface of the moon, where sunlight falls.
This is the first time water molecules have been found in this part of the moon. Earlier, water was found on the moon, but it was in the darkest parts of the satellite, where sunlight couldn’t reach.
Scientists say the new findings suggest that water could be present at most parts of the lunar surface. NASA says this is a crucial discovery in future lunar explorations.
The discovery was made by NASA ‘s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).
SOFIA discovered water molecules (H2O) in Clavius, one of the largest craters visible from Earth, located in the southern hemisphere of the Moon.
Two new studies published in Nature Astronomy show that there may be more water on the lunar surface and the presence of ice than previously thought.
The article goes on to say that it is time to explore the possibility of extraterrestrial life, and that this is a very energetic discovery as its beginning.
New research will also begin on how water may have formed on the surface of the moon, where there is no air. NASA observes that in the future, astronauts will be able to use this water to quench their thirst and for other purposes.
In 2019, NASA launched the Artemis lunar project to find water on the Moon.
At the same time, in the 1800s, explorers were under the impression that there would be no water on the moon. The reason for this observation was that the clouds were not visible.
However, in 1978, Russia claimed to have discovered water on the moon and then this observation was widely ignored at the time.
At the same time, the Russian media has ridiculed NASA’s new discovery. Sputnik, a Russian state-owned media outlet, reported that they had discovered it earlier and that it had been rejected by NASA.
