Acted as agents of Qatar; four people, including a former MEP, were arrested in Brussels

Rome: Four people, including a former MEP who worked as Qatar’s henchmen in the corridors of European power, were arrested in Brussels. The action follows revelations of illegal European Parliament interference in political and economic decisions in Qatar’s favour.

Antonio Panzeri (67), Secretary General Luca Visentini (53), a member of the left-wing Article One Party and current head of the International Trade Union Confederation ETUC, as well as two Italians, were detained. One of them is an NGO director and a parliamentary assistant.

During a raid conducted by Brussels police, police discovered half a million euros kept illegally in Panzeri’s home as part of the investigation. The police conducted 14 raids in this connection.

Panzeri and Visentini are well-known figures in Brussels. Panseri is a member of the directorate of the old European Caucus of Socialists and Democrats. He was an MEP for three terms, from 2004 to 2019. He also chaired the subcommittee on human rights.

Visentini has long been one of the most influential leaders of European trade unions. He started his career for UIL in Friuli and was elected Federal Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) in March 2011. In 2015, he was appointed Secretary General. He became the head of the world’s largest organised union at the congress held in Melbourne at the end of last month.
