Dublin – For the first time in over 20 years, a new nursing school is being established in Ireland. Maynooth University has officially received accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) to open its School of Nursing, with the first intake of students scheduled for September.
The inaugural class will admit 30 students into its Bachelor of Science (BSc) in General Nursing programme. Applications for the programme will be accepted through the Central Applications Office (CAO) beginning on August 28.
Professor Fintan Sheerin, Head of the School of Nursing at Maynooth University, announced that the school plans to increase its intake to up to 100 students over the next four years. The programme has been developed in response to the recommendations from the Expert Review of Nursing and Midwifery Curriculum, published last year.
The nursing programme is being launched in collaboration with the Health Service Executive (HSE) in the Dublin and Midlands regions. It will align with the government’s Sláintecare strategy—a 10-year plan to reform Ireland’s health services.
Maynooth University President, Professor Eva Leinonen, noted that the establishment of the nursing school reflects the university’s broader strategic vision to expand academic offerings in health and medicine.
The initiative has been welcomed by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless, and Chief Nursing Officer, Rachel Kenna, who praised the move as a timely and critical investment in the future of Ireland’s healthcare workforce.
