Authorities fears that Garda might lose public support if they are given more powers

The Police Authority has said that the Garda should not be given more powers as the Covid expansion continues unabated.

The new decision comes amid fears that Garda might lose public support when stricter restrictions are imposed. Chairman Bob Collins said the emergency powers should be reduced or the garda would lose public support.

In a report on pandemic policing, Collins points out that the extra powers given to the Garda and its widespread use are worrying. His view is that imposing restrictions is not a universal solution.

He says police services in neighboring countries have been given more power, but there is no evidence that this has fully influenced the behavior of the public.

He added that at the annual meeting of the authority in early October, some people had expressed concerns that the social cohesion of the people would be disrupted in the wake of Covid’s continuing and that some in the community would not be participating in Covid prevention activities.

In the mean time some suggested that the Garda should be given more powers.

Collins, however, supported Commissioner Drew Harris’ position that the Garda’s authority should not be underestimated and that the Garda should not be given more power at present.

A spokesman for the Garda said they are confident that the Garda’s Three E (Engagement, Explanation, Encouragement) approach was appropriate and effective in the context of a health emergency.

He added that if Garda was given more powers to enforce the regulations, it should be accurately and effectively monitored by the Authority.
