Cork Cocaine Bust: €100 Million Stash Seized on Cargo Ship Off Irish Coast

Cork: In a major operation, authorities have intercepted a staggering €100 million worth of cocaine on a cargo ship discovered off the Irish coast. The Panama-registered bulk cargo vessel has been identified as the central hub for this illicit drug trafficking operation, with a smaller vessel found near Wexford on Sunday linked to it.

The massive ship recently docked at Cork harbour, and customs officers are currently conducting comprehensive checks to determine the precise quantity of narcotics on board. This monumental seizure could mark one of the most significant drug busts in the nation’s history.

Gardaí, along with forensic and technical experts, are meticulously examining the suspected ‘mother ship’ known as the MV Matthew, which embarked on its journey from South America. Their objective is to establish whether cocaine was transported across the Atlantic to reach the Irish coast. Additionally, three individuals who were aboard the small vessel, which crashed near Wexford, have been apprehended.

This extraordinary operation differs significantly from routine inspections carried out on large shipments arriving via trucks and trailers at Rosslare Euro port from other continents. Gardaí now harbour strong suspicions that a substantial portion of the drugs had been intentionally jettisoned overboard in an attempt to reduce the cargo’s weight during the aftermath of Storm Agnes. The investigation into this intricate criminal network continues to unfold.
