Dunleary, Ireland, has been named the best town in Europe.

Dunleary: The Academy of Urbanism Award for the best town in Europe (Dun Laoghaire) has been awarded to Dunleary (Dun Laoghaire). This award is given to the European continent’s best, most sustainable, and improved environment. Mary Hanafin, mayor of Dunleary-Rathdown County Council, received the Great Town 2022 award at a ceremony in London.

Dunleary was chosen for the award because of its urban village, which connects projects, bathing areas, footpaths, and parks along the coast. The award also mentions successful and cost-effective urbanisation. Pedestrianization of the city’s main street was also considered amid the COVID restrictions at the beginning of the epidemic.

The academy’s team visited Dunleary earlier this month to make the selection. The council’s chief executive, Frank Curran, along with senior officers, councillors, local businesses, and Tidy Towns representatives, organised a walking tour for them. The Coastal Mobility Cycle Route, Dunleary Harbour, the DLR Lexicon Library, George Place Social Housing, and the new Myrtle Square and Convent Lane Public Plaza near Bloomfield Shopping Centre were all included in the tour.

The 2022 Academy’s Great Neighborhood Award goes to Govanhill, Glasgow. Mill Street in Perth, Scotland, received the Great Street Award. Peace Hall in Halifax, Yorkshire, received the Great Place Award. Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork received the Academy’s Great Street Award in 2015. The Great City 2022 Award was given to Trieste, Italy.
