England defeated India in first test match; setback for India in Test Championship

India lost by 227 runs in the first cricket test against England. India was bowled out for 192 in the fifth day of the match, chasing England’s target of 420.

Score: England – 578, 178, India – 337, 192. With the win, England took the lead in the four-match series (1-0).

With the defeat, India slipped to fourth place at the Test Championship Points table, while England climbed to the top.

England who batted first in the series scored a huge total of 578, with captain Joe Root scoring a double ton on his 100th test match. On the other hand, Indian batsmen could only score 337 in the first innings. England was well planned as they didn’t enforce the follow on, and batted for the fourth day as well. Ravichandran Ashwin, who took six wickets, smashed England in the second innings. But the visitors scored 178 and set a massive target of 420 for India to win.

India, who started the fifth day at 39 for one, lost Cheteshwar Pujara for 15 when the team score reached 58. James Anderson stunned India by knocking off Shubman Gill (50) and Ajinkya Rahane (0) in the same over. Soon after, Anderson returned Rishabh for 11 runs.

Skipper Virat Kohli tried to resist with Ashwin who later came to the crease, but Ashwin was soon dismissed for nine. The celebrations at the England camp began with the departure of Virat Kohli (72), who had given some hope to the Indian fans. Kohli and the team were not even able to level the match as England dismissed the next three batsmen soon after.
