Dublin: Experts are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution when defrosting their car windscreens during the winter months, as numerous hazardous shortcuts continue to circulate on social media. One widely shared method involves filling a plastic bag with hot water to melt ice on the windscreen—an approach that specialists warn can lead to costly damage.
Graham Conway, Managing Director of Select Car Leasing, advises that while using warm water in a sealed sandwich bag may be relatively safer, pouring boiling or near-boiling water poses a serious risk. “If you use red-hot water, you are putting yourself in danger. The glass can crack,” he cautioned. He added that sandwich bags are smooth and flexible, reducing the risk of scratching the windscreen, unlike other improvised tools.
Conway also warned against relying solely on the car’s interior heating to melt snow or ice. Aside from significantly increasing fuel consumption, prolonged idling can reduce engine lifespan. Instead, he recommended preventive measures, noting that “prevention is better than cure.” Covering the windscreen overnight with a protective screen—such as cardboard—can prevent ice buildup. Wrapping carrier bags around wing mirrors can also help.
Natural methods can be effective as well. Vinegar, a natural antifreeze, can be mixed with water and sprayed onto the windscreen to remove ice quickly. A single spray is often enough to clear the glass.
Motorists are encouraged to adopt safe and preventative practices to avoid unnecessary damage and ensure safer winter driving.
