Famous Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee passed away

Kolkata: Legendary Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee has died at the age of 85.

He was admitted to the hospital on October 6 with Covid‌ infection. He was shifted to the intensive care unit due to deteriorating health. Later, after he became Covid negative, there were reports that his health had improved.

On October 11, he was treated twice with plasma therapy, but his condition worsened. Infections of the lungs and urinary tract also made his condition worse.

Soumitra Chatterjee, one of the best actors India has ever seen, is best known through Satyajit Ray’s films. Soumitra was the hero of Satyajit Ray in about 15 films.

Born in Kolkata in 1935, Soumitra made her film debut in 1959 with Satyajit Ray’s The World of Apu (Apoor Sansar). He has also acted in films by Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha, Asit Sen, Ajoy Kar and Rituparno Ghosh.

Soumitra Chatterjee was honored with the Padma Bhushan by the country in 2004 and was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2012 for her lifetime contribution to Indian cinema.

Soumitra Chatterjee was the first Indian to receive the Order of Arts and Letters, the highest honor bestowed on artists by the French government. He has won the National Award for Best Actor once and Special Mention twice.
