DUBLIN: A 30-year-old man was taken to court yesterday in connection with a firework attack on gardaí during an anti-lockdown protest in Dublin last Saturday.
Jake Merriman of Meadowlands Avenue, Monkstown, Dublin, has been charged with a total of five offences. He is accused of discharging an eight-cannon firework at gardaí and also of throwing two glass bottles at gardaí in separate incidents.
Mr. Merriman was arrested at 11:20 pm by Detective Sergeant Patrick Traynor of Pearse Street Garda Station. The detective Patrick Traynor told the court that there were “numerous bottles” and the charges related to “five separate incidents”.
Judge Brian O’Shea ruled that the case was too serious to be dealt with at the District Court and granted the father-of-four bail to appear before the court next month.
He said the case could not be treated as a minor offence, and that the case “was not fit to be tried summarily.” However, the court granted Mr. Merriman free legal aid after learning that he had a business in “power washing”, but that he was currently on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment.
Judge O’Shea granted him bail on a number of conditions, including that he stay away from Grafton Street and the Dublin 2 area, and he keeps the peace. He is scheduled to appear in court again on April 14.
