Beirut: At least 20 people were killed and over 450 injured in Lebanon after explosions involving walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah occurred across the country. These attacks, believed to be part of a sophisticated operation targeting the group’s communication devices, followed a suspected Israeli strike on pagers used by Hezbollah. The blasts ignited fires, damaging homes, vehicles, and infrastructure. While Israel did not officially comment, Hezbollah and the Lebanese government blamed Mossad for the attack, escalating tensions amid the ongoing Gaza war.
Lebanese Information Minister Ziyad Makari described the incident as a new form of warfare and vowed coordination between the state and Hezbollah for investigations. Israeli forces have been redirected to the northern border, heightening fears of further conflict. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant indicated a shift in focus to the northern arena, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to secure the region and enable residents to return home. Iran, whose ambassador to Lebanon was injured, vowed retaliation and warned of potential regional escalation.
The U.S. is urging restraint, with Washington’s envoy Amos Hochstein advising Israel that a broader conflict with Hezbollah could lead to a wider regional war.
