Indian-American Doctor Vivek Murthy confirmed as Joe Biden’s surgeon general

WASHINGTON DC: The Senate has confirmed Indian-American physician Vivek Murthy as US President Joe Biden’s surgeon general. Dr. Vivek Murthy’s top priority would be to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has hit hard the United States.

The US Surgeon General will advise President Joe Biden on the pandemic and be the federal government’s leading public health voice.

Dr. Vivek Murthy (43), was supported by seven senators from the opposition Republican Party. Senators confirmed Dr. Murthy as Biden’s surgeon general by a vote of 57-43.  

This is Vivek Murthy’s second term as Surgeon General of the United States. Previously, he served as Surgeon General during the Obama administration. However, he was forced to step down during the Trump administration.

“I am deeply grateful to be confirmed by the Senate to serve once again as your Surgeon General. We have endured great hardship as a nation over the past year, and I look forward to working with you to help our nation heal and create a better future for our children,” Vivek Murthy tweeted.

Dr. Vivek Murthy was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. His parents immigrated from Karnataka, India, and his family relocated to Miami when he was three years old.

The Indian-American was a top health adviser to the Biden campaign. He was a member of Biden’s public health advisory committee when the pandemic first hit the US.
